How old is Doom now? Is this just one of the most succesful and recognized first person shooters made? This port attempts to mimic the original version as close as possible using Open Source Software. Though the original version of Doom can probably be purchased for next to nothing, chocolate Doom gives you an open source version that lets you change the code yourself or just play an open source version that has only a few minor difference to teh original version.

Thanks for the link. To clarify: Chocolate Doom is only an open source Doom _engine_, ie. the program itself and none of the game material. You still need to buy Doom to get the original IWAD files in order to play.
There is a separate project called "Freedoom" which is creating the other half: a free IWAD file. Combining Freedoom with a GPL source port, you get a completely Free Softare Doom engine-based game.
