According to the current developer,"Warzone 2100 is a real-time strategy game, originally developed by Pumpkin Studios and published by Eidos-Interactive™. Although comparable to other 3D RTS games, it does contain some features that are unique. These include various radar technologies, a greater focus on artillery and counter-battery technologies, as well as a different vehicle design method. It was released in 1999 for PC and Playstation®."

Looking for down and dirty, easy to play Chess? Pawn has been around for awhile and gives probably one of the easiest ways to play chess. Graphics wise it offers something we could have played on the NES back in the 80s. But, at 159k, your latest annual report probably takes up more memory than the download of Pawn.

OpenCity, its like Sim City taken a step back. With much of the open source software available remember that software of this sort is not well funded, so having the best graphics and user interface is not always an option. OpenCity, looks and plays a lot like Sim City, yet graphically, it seems more like a step back in time, with it's strangely colored housing and rudimentary greenery. What do you expect?

As the game as not yet hit a 1.0 release, there are still bugs to be worked out. Even the cars seem a bit strange at this point. If you aren't accustomed to the Sim City series, basically you build up your own cities with limited cash funds. With proper planning you can stay funded to build a metropolis. Poor planning and you'll be selling your housing for factories to make ends meet. You are the mayor and make all the decisions for your new city.

OpenTTD, Transport Tycoon Open Source

It can be really hard to come up with new ideas, therefore we clone what others have already made. OpenTTD, better known as Transport Tycoon Deluxe Open Source, is pretty much an exact clone of the Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe".
Transport Control?
In openTTD, you will be controlling transportation, traffic to create a smooth running city. It many ways it looks familiar to the Sim City franchise. By viewing the screenshots you can see that openTTD has actually made a few improvements on the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe.

Open Source Civilization, FreeCiv

If you were ever a fan of Sid Meiers Civilization games, you'll like the open source civilization game FreeCiv. The reason I am a fan of open source is not really the fact that the games are free, rather that multiple authors get to contribute their ideas towards building the game better. It also lets anyone join in the game regardless of age, color, and wealth status. As long as you have a fast enough internet connection you can join in on the fun.
A little about FreeCiv
According to FreeCiv.Wikia.com: "Freeciv is much more than a game: In Freeciv the game players can decide what the rules will be! This means that unlike nearly every other computer game, Freeciv can be a different game each time you play. This opportunity comes with some cost. Especially at first, a player trying to tackle all the subtleties and nuances of this complex gaming experience can get a little lost. It can even be overwhelming.
No need to panic: The opportunity to make the game complex also means you can make it quite simple to play. You can even get up and playing one of the default scenarios within a matter of minutes."
By no means is this game easy on the first try. But if you can master this game, you'll have the foundation for mastering most games in this category.
