I've been covering many first person shooters lately on ClickforNick's Free Software Blog, mainly, because these free first person shooters. Let's take a look at Warsow.
Warsow, a cartoony Shooter
Warsow uses the Quake 2 engine, yet redesigned the graphics to give them a cartoony feel. Have you seen the movie a Scanner Darkly? Both this game at the movie has a similar feel.

"Warsow is developped under the motto "by gamers for gamers" by a team coming from all kinds of gaming backgrounds. To attain the "by gamers for gamers" spirit, the community are our betatesters, both through internal testing sessions (with community members) and in the feedback on the public releases."

Sauerbraten, free First Person Shooter, Assassin Edition

Sauerbraten, the name threw me off at first since in Germany it is a roast meat. Online its a first person multi-player shooter. Just one week ago they've release the latest version of Sauerbrater called the Assassin Edition.
Eye Candy?
From the screen shots, Sauerbraten is no roast meat, rather a very well designed game with some of the best graphics I've seen for free first person shooters. With games this good looking, why should anyone need to pay for shooting people online? Why not take out that aggression for free? If you've played Cube, the predecessor, then it is time to make an upgrade and start playing Sauerbraten.

Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, Free Multiple Online Shooter

Originally Wolfenstein Enemy Territory was meant as a full first person shooter and multi-player game, but ID, the game creators, ran into problems and decided that it would be better just to release the game as free multi-player online shooter.

You fight as the Axis or Allies to either complete or stop mission objectives. Tough we already know the real outcome of the war, you can change some history in the game. Actually most of the events in this game never really happened. There are not only official maps available, but also since its release, plenty of unofficial maps have been created by the internet community.

Frets on Fire, Free Open Source Guitar Hero

Ever been in Best Buy and just wished you could be playing Guitar Hero. I've tried to jump on that game plenty of times, but there are always small kids in my way who just won't get out of my way. If you've had these problems like me, thankfully we can play the equivalent of Guitar Hero free.

DDay Normandy Free First Person Shooter

Want to relive World War 2? DDay Normandy is an open source first person shooter and a complete modification of Quake 2. Though the game is no longer being developed, there have been slight updates from time to time including new maps and models.

Just like the war, its an all out German American Battle. You fight with the backdrop of a European village with guns and knives. There have been additional expansions for including Russians and the Japanese if you feel like getting more countries involved in this multi player shootout.

America's Army, Open Source First Person Shooter

The U.S. Government developed their own first person shooter? America's Army was developed as a way to help with U.S. Army recruitment. Is this a good way to get people to join the army, through video games? It's online game play has actually been rated in the top ten of online multi-player games.

That is the furthest I'd recommend taking a game like this. Though the video game looks great, can you really believe that real life is just like the game? That is for you to decide. In any case, get the video game version of the U.S. Military with America's Army.

It's the secret Maryo chronicles, the open source version of Super Mario World. If you've missed the SNES version, here is the windows version developed by programmers and if you know programming you yourself can add to the Chronicles of Secret Maryo Chronicles.

Bombermaaan, Free Bomberman Clone

Bombermaaan, it's the original Bomberman with a slight changing of spelling. The concept reminds me of those "Oakley Software Glasses". They look just like the real thing. From outward appearances no one would know the difference.

Super TuxKart, first there was the Tux Mario Clone, now they've even touched upon the Mario Kart Series. Though it seems to be a clone, fortunately the creators of Super Tuxkart got creative and designed their own racers and levels. The only idea that isn't original is the racing Kart idea.

AssaultCube, Free Multiplayer Shooter

AssaultCube takes multi player fun and combines it with large weapons and remote locations to bring players together to shoot each other. Sounds like most first person shooter games right? With AssaultCube (formerly known as ActionCube) a small package delivers a lot of fun. In its small 19mb file size, you get plenty of multi player fun.

OpenCity, its like Sim City taken a step back. With much of the open source software available remember that software of this sort is not well funded, so having the best graphics and user interface is not always an option. OpenCity, looks and plays a lot like Sim City, yet graphically, it seems more like a step back in time, with it's strangely colored housing and rudimentary greenery. What do you expect?

As the game as not yet hit a 1.0 release, there are still bugs to be worked out. Even the cars seem a bit strange at this point. If you aren't accustomed to the Sim City series, basically you build up your own cities with limited cash funds. With proper planning you can stay funded to build a metropolis. Poor planning and you'll be selling your housing for factories to make ends meet. You are the mayor and make all the decisions for your new city.

TORCS, The Open Racing Car Simulator, is it really one of the best open source racing simulators? Just by looking at some of the screenshots I am already fairly impressed.

Your can steer with a joystick or steering wheel, if the device is supported by your platform. It is also possible to drive with the mouse or the keyboard. The simulation features a simple damage model, collisions, tire and wheel properties (springs, dampers, stiffness, ...), aerodynamics (ground effect, spoilers, ...) and much more. The gameplay allows different types of races from the simple practice session up to the championship. Enjoy racing against your friends in the split screen mode with up to four human players."
Currently there aren't too many open source racing seems out there, but Torcs is a great addition to the meager lineup.

It can be really hard to come up with new ideas, therefore we clone what others have already made. OpenTTD, better known as Transport Tycoon Deluxe Open Source, is pretty much an exact clone of the Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe".

Media Center works as a graphical way to browse through movies, clips, or even watch and record tv. With the use of a remote you get full functionality and ease of browser.

Gimp, like most open software, mimics another rather costly program for the price of... $0 nada zip. Like Photoshop, Gimp provides advanced graphic editing utilities and you will be touching up models in no time.
If you use paint, the free windows graphics program, you really are missing out. Paint offers you the most basic of features and lacks in any functions that could be considered quality. Gimp on the other hand offers a variety of tools and resources for touchups, fixups, and even just small home repairs. Ok this won't fix your house, your nose, or your wrinkles in real life, but its powerful graphic editor will.

If you were ever a fan of Sid Meiers Civilization games, you'll like the open source civilization game FreeCiv. The reason I am a fan of open source is not really the fact that the games are free, rather that multiple authors get to contribute their ideas towards building the game better. It also lets anyone join in the game regardless of age, color, and wealth status. As long as you have a fast enough internet connection you can join in on the fun.

This means that unlike nearly every other computer game, Freeciv can be a different game each time you play. This opportunity comes with some cost. No need to panic: The opportunity to make the game complex also means you can make it quite simple to play. You can even get up and playing one of the default scenarios within a matter of minutes."
By no means is this game easy on the first try. But if you can master this game, you'll have the foundation for mastering most games in this category.

Any computer isn't complete without a combat simulator. At least most of my friends studying flight would tell you that.
"FlyingGuns is a flight- and battlefield simulator used to develop and test
approaches for low-resource, internet enabled games and distributed simulation. Areas of application might be industrial and military simulation or entertainment.
The same time, FlyingGuns is a 3D action computer game capable of single- and multiplayer gaming.
FlyingGuns lets the player enter a WW1 fighter plane and fight against human or AI opponents. Having slow planes keeps the gameplay compact. The game is capable to handle a real lot of opponents the same time. Fighting against 100 AI opponents solves the 'where is the enemy' problem, which is quite common to flightsim today, in an extraordinary manner."

SuperTux, Open Source Linux Mario

If you are a fan of the Linux Penguin and Super Brothers 3, then you'll like SuperTux, a combination of the two. It seems more that SuperTux just cloned Super Mario 3 and changed the characters.
Just look at the way you move through the levels, it couldn't be
more similar to Super Mario 3. In any case, SuperTux is a great way to relive the old days of Mario.
According to the authors, "SuperTux is a classic 2D jump'n run sidescroller game in a style similar to the original SuperMario games. The Milestone1 release of SuperTux features 9 enemies, 26 playable levels, software and OpenGL rendering modes, configurable joystick and keyboard input, new music and completly redone graphics. Together with a little story, we hope to provide a good gaming experince with this first Milestone release. "

Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the "Armoury". The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe, the alien is able to evolve into a new class. The more kills gained the more powerful the classes available.
The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures." -tremulous.net

Urban Terror could best be described as a Hollywood tactical shooter; it is realism based to a certain extent (environments/weapons/player models), but also goes by the motto "fun over realism" (fast gameplay and lots of action). This combination of reality and action results in a very unique, enjoyable and addictive game.
No longer requires Quake 3 Engine
Previously in order to play Urban Terror, you needed to own Quake 3. With Quake 3 open source, Urban Terror is completely free online. This brings memories of counter strike, the mod for Half Life. Is this game fun? Definately.
